12 Songs: Torrential New Year
We’re all sighing a little breath of relief now that 2022 is over.
Here at IB HQ, the new year brought with it the rare Socal torrential downpour. It felt like 2022 throwing everything it had left at us in some last ditch effort to piss us all off before being damned to obscurity.
The following is collection of tunes informed by the first rain of the new year. Apologies in advance if you were hoping for some goal-smashing, cardio-pumping, resolution-type playlist, but you should know us better by now.
Including, amongst others:
Flamin’ Groovies. “She’s Falling Apart” might be one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
BadBadNotGood. Welcome to the world of art-school shadow jazz.
Cleaners from Venus. Martin Newell’s legendary solo project gained traction through the mail-order cassette world in 1980’s England. While not necessarily evident in the track we included, they’re also the reason this guy sounds the way he does.
Forgiveness. The latest and greatest in the ambient genre. Their instrumental track “Rainbird” is an addictive listen.
Modest Mouse. Rest in peace Jeremiah Green. The Oahu-born drummer - who played on all but one of their albums - passed away on Saturday. It’s been a while since I listened to any of their music, but one of my fondest childhood memories is playing “Float On” on Guitar Hero with my brother (set to insane difficulty of course). Included is their bittersweet live track “3rd Planet,” off what has to be one of the best album titles in history, Baron Von Bullshit Rides Again.
Here’s to a less-than-torrential 2023. —Jackson Todd
