3 New Songs to Play for your Friends
(Sandy) Alex G - "Southern Sky"
(Sandy) Alex G, the indie powerhouse musician who has been threatening fans with stardom for the last couple years, is releasing his third album "House of Sugar" on Domino Records — ninth total — this September. He dropped the video for "Southern Sky" last week and it's a must watch, must listen kind of situation, and denotes comparisons to Elliott Smith more than any other song of his I've heard.
Kirin J. Callinan - "You Weren't In Love With Me"
Australian musician Kirin J. Callinan released an album of covers earlier this year, titled "Return To Center." I highly encourage the full absorption of this record, but let's stay focused. Last month, he dropped the video for his Billy Field cover, "You Weren't In Love With Me," and I've maybe watched it 93 times. It's moody, cinematic, almost like an editing room floor cut from an 80s cult classic. And starring Andie MacDowell who apparently does not age, the video brings texture to an already vivid tale.
Big Thief - "Not"
Big Thief has always taken a polarizing effect on listeners, so if you're in favor of the Brooklyn-based emotion inducing four piece, please continue reading. In a rare and prolific move, Big Thief has announced the release of their second album this year, "Two Hands," due out in October. And with it, they've dropped the audio video for lead single "Not," a powerful, escalating proclamation of negatives, of what is not, and what can never be. Singer Adrianne Lenker's conviction in this series of nots is overwhelming, to the point where you can physically feel her voice crack as she strains to convey her creed.
