A Visual Treat From Chippa Wilson is coming Friday
What’s keeping us going? The little things. Teeny tiny things really. Morsels of goodness that keep us moving. Looking forward. Small bursts of creativity that keep the wheels rolling, inching us closer to the things we miss. And today we’re stoked to say we have a little something new for you (and it’s not an obstacle course of any sort).
The other day Chippa Wilson called — he’s holed up on the East Coast of Australia, riding this out just like the rest of us — and asked if we’d wanna premiere a new vid he made with his pal Ben. Creative and filmmaker Ben Gulliver and Chippa cracked open a hard drive that housed an interesting piece they shot in the winter and decided to get creative with it. What they made will premiere here Friday as a little treat to look forward to. A pink Easter egg of optimism. Hopefully it give you a little something new to look forward to, something to cap a productive week or something to get your head right for another weekend in the den.
I caught up briefly with Chippa and Ben to give you an idea of what’s coming Friday.—Travis Ferré
Inherent Bummer: I’m a pretty big critic of wave pools — mostly because of what they do to pure surf culture — but the one thing I’ve always said was how rad it would be for creativity, and creative filmmaking. What inspired this take on the pool?
Ben Gulliver: I was in LA with Balaram [Stack] and Chippa after a week long road trip from Canada where we mainly just rode skateboards and got zero waves. There were no waves in California either so we lined up some flights and a rental car and next thing we knew we were in Waco, Texas. It was winter so the park was closed but we dialed in a full day and half to surf. I figured I might as well film everything since I had a water housing for the RED with me and I thought it would be fun to swim. Also, the boys can always use some clips for their social media or whatever, so we went.
Did anything in particular influence this video?
I just wanted to find a creative way to use this footage. It’s really difficult to do something different, but I took a chance with infrared filters and color-grading. I’m happy we filmed this stuff in the winter too — the trees are all bare and it just feels different than the Waco we all already know.
What did Chippa say when you brought the concept to him?
I think I sent him a rough draft like a week ago and he was stoked. He knows there’s only so much you can do with pool clips [laughs].
Tell us a bit about you, who are ya for those who don’t know the man behind the tools?
Ben Gulliver, I live in Vancouver, Canada (about 6 hours from Tofino). I’ve been filming skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing for 15 years and been a commercial and documentary cinematographer for about 8. I love filming surfing still because you can travel with your friends, make films and see great surfing.
How have you been staying sane during all this?
The timing weirdly was in my favor since I bought a house in November after living in condos for the last decade. I live here with my girlfriend Jaclyn and our retriever, Stanley. Being a new home owner and the fact that its spring here, I’ve been busy with landscaping and house shit. Mundane, but I’ve actually really been enjoying it. The house backs onto a river so I’ll be getting out the rod and reel to start fishing for trout and salmon.
Any behind the scenes stories about the shoot?
The funny thing about that Waco trip is Balaram, Chip and I spent the first night drinking beers and playing SKATE (horse) until 3 a.m. and the next day the boys’ legs were cooked [laughs]. Like they could hardly walk let alone land an air. So not a funny story as much as just a bad judgement call story [laughs].
I really want to also say thanks to the crew at BSR Surf Resort because they were really nice people and very accommodating with everything. Hope to get back there again one day.
Check back tomorrow for some sneak peeks and then we’ll premiere the vid Friday morning PST.
