Best Sections of All-Time: The opening Section to Momentum: Under the Influence

The opening section of Momentum: Under the Influence starts with a shared medley part. It features Ben Bourgeois, Fred Pattachia, Mike Losness, Masatoshi Ohno, Jason Shibata, Mike Todd and Betet. Now, these weren’t the massive names of the moment — and some never really would become all that household— but this section set the tone for one of the greatest surf films of all-time (come at me!) and put them all on the map.

These guys were clawing to qualify types and thanks to a film like this, we had context on how they surfed and it came through a Taylor Steele produced video with an iconic No Knife riff that lives in the halls of any y2k surf fan. So they look rad. And that’s what I love about this part. Once a few of them got on tour, we we already fans.

That and we got some really cool insight into the filming of it with Mike Losness and Benny B last week while conducting some retrospectives for a project with Reef. More on that soon.

So while this part might not tower above with some of the other giant sections we’ve featured, this part served an important purpose and when you watch it all together, it just makes you psyched to surf. Listen to that No Knife record here, and go watch the section below. —Travis Ferré
