Best Sections of All-Time: Jamie O'Brien in Who is J.O.B.

We’re sticking with the Pipeline theme with Day one of the Billabong Pipeline Pro hitting the water — and it’d be weird to not highlight Jamie O’Brien when you talk about Pipeline.

When you think of the best ever Pipeline surfers in modern history there’s a short list that is a cut above the rest and an even shorter list that sit atop that.

One trailblazer that has made Pipeline his home, quite literally, is Jamie O’Brien. He grew up right there on the beach with Pipeline as his front yard. He’s invested more time out there than most and made a career by showing us what is possible at Pipeline.

J.O.B. clipped the traditional route of chasing the QS in sub-par surf to get onto the Championship Tour and make your mark. Instead, he started stacking clips and making signature films that showed his freakish talent as well as some radical stunts. Freakshow, Freak Side, Who is J.O.B., A wild section in Taylor Steele’s Campaign 2, and more…

He is anything but traditional. Hell, the guy lit himself on fire and got spat out of some bombs at Teahupoo. One of the first to adopt the POV angle and take us straight into the pit using a GoPro in various ways and still innovating that today. He showed that he was “the guy” at Pipeline and proved it to the world when he won the 2004 Pipeline Masters as a wildcard.

Being one of the first professional surfers to create his own brand and media house through his YouTube channel. Now he’s one of the most watched surfers on the platform. In 2015 he coached Adriano DeSouza to win the Pipeline Masters and a world title, so you know his methods work! Now you can even learn to surf through his Jamie O’Brien Surf Experience on the North Shore.

His level or admiration and respect for Pipeline and the surfers there is of the highest.

We recently hung out with him to hear about his Best One Ever at Pipeline and he showed us some of his favorite Pipeline surfer’s boards that he’s collected over the years as well as a few of his personal favorites that he rode some psycho waves on.

In Scene Report: The North Shore we asked Barron Mamiya, Noah Beschen and Makana Pang about growing up on the North Shore and who they looked up to most, they all said JOB was right up there. His surfing in Who is J.O.B. was something they had on repeat. Especially his section from Pipeline.

We had a watch and wanted to remind you about this one from one of the most dominant Pipeline surfers of all-time.
