Best Sections of All-Time: Stoke: The Very Short Movie
I’ve spent a lot of time trying to explain surfing to people who don’t surf. I’m sure you have too. And over the holidays, you will once again find yourself trying to articulate it to your aunt and uncle over some egg nog fueled convo that will veer in and out of dangerous political zones and you’ll sound like a cliche mess when someone inevitably asks you about “the surf.” It’s OK. We’ve all been there. Trying to explain what it’s like “to be stoked” or to experience the daily inherent bummers that we all love to suffer from is a fool’s errand.
Everyone from the deep thinking surf writer, philosopher, podcaster, vlogger to the ranting parking lot troll have tried to articulate it. But I think this video Matt Warshaw (of all people! — I’m certain among his many talents Matt doesn’t put filmmaker at the top of his EOS bio) made sums it up best. Watch this compilation and take a little trip through surf culture history and tell me you don’t feel it.
In honor of their fundraiser that they’re hosting right now (we hope you’ll contribute a donation or a subscription), let’s celebrate this epic piece of accidental surf celluloid we all need to carry in our pocket.
