Best Sections of All-Time: Thicker Than Water: "The Green Board" Part
I used to work in the wetsuit “cave” at our local surf shop. The Cave was basically a neoprene dungeon with one shitty TV, racks on racks of wetties, rashguards and boxes of booties. It was easy to hide from the customers and watch surf vids.
The problem was our VHS tape — which had like 25 surf videos burned onto it — had no sound. It was just the visuals. Most the surf vids on there I owned so I knew what they sounded like, but I never had a copy of Thicker than Water so I never knew what it sounded like. Not to mention it was made by surfing’s most famous musician Jack Johnson.
Well, it turns out the music and the interviews are pretty good. Really good, in fact. And the film is a rewatchable relic that I’m happy I now own and cherish. The section below — the famous green board sequence — is a celebration of our first memories riding waves and getting down to the beach with our friends and includes interviews with Shane Dorian, Brad Gerlach, Kelly Slater, Tim Curran, Rob Machado, Dan Malloy, Chris Malloy, Bruce Irons, Noah Johnson and more cut over footage of them all ripping the same single fin green board.
Remember this film and part instead of Curious George next time you hear a Jack Johnson song. .—Travis Ferré
