Best Sections of All-Time: Tim Curran: Here and Now
We’ve been digging through the archive over at Reef for an upcoming project and when we got to the 90s vault we realized they sponsored everyone. You weren’t anybody in 1995 if you didn’t have a Reef sticker and an ad next to a bikini and a sandal in a surf mag.
One of the most interesting finds was an ad of Tim Curran in a golf cart that took us down a rabbit hole that ended up with us watching the Quiksilver produced and dad directed 1995 film Here and Now. The movie has a bit of a Disney meets Karate Kid feel-good “aww shucks” innocence to it, but the surfing is insane.
We’ll highlight the opening part as the best section. It represents a time in surfing when things were simple: You toiled away in Oxnard perfecting your alley oop while riding for Billabong, won the OP Junior against Damien Hobgood, Andy Irons (RIP) and Mikala Jones (RIP), sign promptly thereafter with rival brand Quiksilver to get a profile film and a trip to Tavarua where you take off on one wave at Cloudbreak, put your arms out and go into the history books of surf marketing 101 as an icon. That wave was EVERYWHERE at the time. Watch it all come to life for Tim below (full film is down there too if you’re a real nostalgia junky).
BTW: We’re hangin with Tim next week if you wanna know where he’s been. We’ll let you know. Until then, enjoy some heart warming innocence alongside wild tailslides and airs.—Travis Ferré
