12 Songs: Slow Burn Set

12 Songs: Slow Burn Set

As much as we’d love to keep the party going with last week’s adrenaline-pumping, coffee-pounding, bird-flipping pre-surf mix, the waves are damn near flat at home and some of us have slightly more important matters at hand.

So here’s our spiritual reset for the rest of the week, a soul-stirring mix of lazy-flamed soundscapes and laconic melodies. We’ll call it the slow burn set

Including:

“Before the Flood”, taken rom Talk Talk’s experimental era, during which they eschewed the pop hooks and predictable song structures that defined their earlier output in favor of a more free-flowing, improvisational sound. Apparently they recorded this song in complete darkness, which totally makes sense. You’ll see. Be sure to light a candle for this one.

Ultimate Painting. Sure, we’ve featured them on a few times already, but every song on their first album is worth a listen. The best Velvet Underground knockoff since Spacemen 3.

Jessica Lea Mayfield. Country girl gone midwest emo, but way better than that sounds.

Kikagoku Moyo, Japan’s newly-disbanded 21st-century legends of psych. RIP.

And no slow burn-themed playlist would be complete without Slowdive. Personally, I’ve always considered the group’s best known tracks to be a bit over-indulgent, swamped by far-out walls of black hole reverb and other digital tomfoolery. But “Here She Comes” demonstrates their more tasteful, organic side.
