Best Sections of All-Time: Dane Reynolds in Nike Comp Redux
If there’s a sure sign that summer is around the corner, it’s when you see the e-bikes lined up at Lowers again.
After the long and relatively dormant season at Lowers, I got excited at the barrage of IG reels hitting my feed from Trestles. And while I don’t really find much interest in partaking in the chaos myself, I do enjoy watching the best flying around out there. Seems like every pro that visits SoCal during the summer is obligated to take a couple laps down on the cobblestones. Though there are a handful of surfers that we don’t get to see out there anymore with all of the professional events throughout summer moved to alternative locations. (I still can’t believe they swapped out the most rippable wave in the US for the basin in BFE). Yes, they have the WSL finals at Lowers, but it’s not the same as watching the local wildcards getting a shot at the reigning world champions, or the free surfs that go down with 30+ of the worlds best out there all at once. Absolutely (was) one of my favorite events of the year.
This week we’re revisiting our old friend Marine Layer Productions to share one of our favorite sections from Lowers in 2012. Well before Chapter 11 was dreamed up and Dane was still throwing the rashie on from time to time, he was creating under the name Marine Layer Productions. The first half of the piece you hear one of his post heat interviews where he is discussing Gabriel Medina (who went on to win the event), Kolohe Andino’s uber thick surfboards, and how he felt sketchy most the event. The back half is him tearing through a few with a violet colored filter over a track by The Clean.
Order more foam, make sure your e-bike is on charge all summer, grab your filmer a filter and get ready to hit it with 100 of your closest friends in an attempt to approach it like DR.—Brandon Guilmette
