Friday Night Flicks: Control
There is a scene in the 2007 film Control that has inspired me to do a lot of insanely foolish and amazing things. It is when the actor Sam Riley, playing Ian Curtis walks out of his house toward his job as a social worker.
He is wearing a trenchoat and looks moody and brooding. The Joy Division song “No Love Lost” comes on and we see the back of his trenchcoat reveal the word HATE taped to it. He then walks into and helps people with special needs gets jobs.
It is a tough movie to watch at times and an altogether inspiring movie to watch at the same time. I think Sam Riley nailed Ian Curtis in the live music scenes and the music alone makes it worth watching. Don’t expect to feel too cheery after, but it’s a movie about the tragic life of Ian Curtis and Joy Division — a band somehow as uplifting as it is dark and tragic.—Travis Ferré
