Friday Night Flicks: Jean-Luc Godard
Jean-Luc Godard, the leading filmmaker in the French New Wave and basically the inventor of “cool” died this week at age 91. His passing makes for the perfect occasion to pour up a tall glass of Old World red and finally getting around to watching one of his films.
If you’re taking it from the top, you kind of have to start with Breathless and Band of Outsiders. Both ooz with cool, French New Wave noir and remind one of a time when filmmaking didn’t require a superhero. It was about mischief, sex appeal and always looking good. And both these films are drowning in all of the above.
Godard liked to improvise, so feel free to do that yourself — he made tons and tons of films.
