Caleb Landry Jones Made Us a Playlist
You may recognize Caleb Landry Jones from the various movies he's been in — Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the 2017 Twin Peaks, and Get Out. He's one of those actors who can slip into a scene and steal it away before you even recognize his face. It was this mild, unassuming aplomb that got him the attention of Jim Jarmusch, presumably for Dead Don't Die, and resulted in a pivotal meeting that changed his life.
Some backstory: Caleb Landry Jones comes from a long line of fiddle players. Music was part of his family and upbringing, and around the same time he began acting professionally, Jones began writing and recording music. He'd carry songs around in his head, either fully-fledged or tangential ideas, until he'd finally record them at his parents' barn in Texas. These songs eventually amounted to a thick catalogue of recorded music he needed the world to hear.
Back to Jarmusch. Jones, nervous about meeting the director, composed a special piece he intended to play for him. Circumstances not allowing a live piano recital, Jones instead sent him two of his barn collections from his overflowing discography. Jarmusch clearly liked what he heard, and the next thing Caleb Landry Jones knew, he had a record deal with Sacred Bones and a debut album on the way.
The Mother Stone, Jones' impressive debut, was released in May of this year. You can tell by listening to the first track that his inspiration runs deep. Echoes of John Lennon circa the White Album, Syd Barrett on A Saucerful of Secrets, and the early, playful, experimental style of Brian Eno all permeate strongly on the album. With a debut so rich in influences, we had to ask Jones to make us a special playlist, and it rips. So here you go. Songs chosen personally from the musician himself. Sacred Bones is releasing the playlist as a super-limited cassette tape for their Record Society members soon, so keep your ears open for that news. For now, sit back and press play. —Maya Eslami
