"One Fast Move or I'm Gone"
“One fast move or I’m gone.”—Jack Kerouac, Big Sur
We put out the call for creatives to join us at Inherent Bummer this week, and we do so with a sense of urgency and a few caveats. You see, we’re a niche bunch — “surfers who probably listen to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds regularly” being our favorite description so far — so we demand a special blend of excellence, style and recklessness.
We’ve been tinkering around over here, defining what exactly Inherent Bummer is for a few years now, setting the stage for a long life ahead, living like the kind of starving artists who will drop their last $14 on the finest Old World red over a hunger satiating sandwich while trying to be a non-cynical thorn in the side of anyone who takes surf culture for granted. It’s a sandy job, but we’re damn thrilled to be the somebodies that get to do it.
Read the call out here, and we hope you’ll reach out if you want to contribute to our fire. But only if you’re up for boarding a ramshackle (but unsinkable) ship manned by a bunch of surfers who hum along to Murder City Devils songs while hanging fine art in the keel of the ship we sail, a pirate’s life for us, y tu?
Oh, and about the urgency: Something about it being better to burn out than fade away, ya know? It’s go time. Everything in its Right Place and all that. Our time is now. Surf media is dead (we’re saving it). Surf brands are gone (we’re replacing them). Surf movies are long gone (so we’re bringing them back). And as you’ll see next Thursday in a new short film we produced with director Jack Boston, surf photography is gasping for air as well (perhaps we can resuscitate that too… [rolls sleeves up].
Cue the Radiohead. One fast move or we’re gone. You coming or what? —Travis Ferré
