Reflection: A weekly look at the best video parts of all time

Reflection: A weekly look at the best video parts of all time

With Shane Dorian turning 50 and Code Red 2.0 making its way through Tahiti this past week, we decided to kick off a weekly reflection on our favorite video parts of all-time with Shane Dorian’s 2005 Campaign 2 part.

The thing that boggles the mind about this section is Shane’s range: a variety of Teahupo’o waves, a left at Jaws, the explosive backhand surfing at Hideaways, the smooth forehand approach in Bali, the long righthand pointbreak tubes in Morocco, and the bonkers ending clips from Chopes — including the one that begged the question, “Where Do We Tow from Here?” on the cover of Surfing Magazine and won him the XXL Monster Tube Award at the 2005 Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards.

After “retiring” from competition in 2004, this part would lead Shane to a string of XXL Big Wave Awards and a paddle surfing renaissance at Jaws.

Alkaline Trio’s dramatic album opener “Time to Waste” served as a perfect curtain call for the film that saw Shane land the surprise ending part in a Taylor Steele film — a shock until you saw the footage. Enjoy humming this tune all day, it’s gonna stick with you. Kinda like this 17-year-old section stuck with us.—Travis Ferré
