It’s not the end of the world.

I’ve written, talked, ranted and raved about Refused for 25 years now — the same amount of time The Shape of Punk to Come has been out, and you know I will be attending their final farewell show in 2025.

But the fact that anyone reading this could walk into a store, or pull it up on Spotify and hit play and listen and still feel that it’s the most original sounding records of all time. It’s as timeless as its Ornette Coleman’s original The Shape of Jazz to Come namesake— which you’ll notice Dennis picks up at the record shop in this video.

I love this band. I love this song. I love this video. I even love Dennis — who happens to have been the first person I ever interviewed for a magazine and he was as kind and thoughtful and radical as you could ever want and interview subject to be.—Travis Ferré

Oh, and Epitaph released a remake record: The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated featuring Refused songs by GEL, Touche Amore, IDLES, Cold Cave, Zulu, Fucked Up and Quicksand. Listen here.

We’ll include this for good measure: maybe the greatest music video ever made:
