Who is Juliette Lacome?

Who is Juliette Lacome?

Juliette Lacome catches our eye often because she always seems to be where we wanna be. Hanging in Hawaii with the Ho family. Cruising around her hometown of Biarritz. Spot of tea in Paris. Indo boat trip here. Dua Lipa concert with @Badboyryry_ there. Flying down the right points of Morocco. Every time you look up, there she is. Right where ya wanna be.

We reached out to get a window into the life of a young professional surfer from Biarritz and it turns out it’s pretty sweet. It hasn’t been without its hurdles and setbacks, but Juliette seems to have the right outlook for success and her journey is just getting started. The future looks bright, stylish and well-lived (obviously, she’s French). And if you’re lookin for her, just imagine where you wanna be. She’s already there.—Travis Ferré

Inherent Bummer: Where did you come from?

Juliette Lacome: I’m from Biarritz, which is a small surf town in the south west of France. I’m as French as it gets my whole family is French but I’m the only one who surfs.

What’s unique about where you sit in the surf landscape?

I feel like I sit in the place where I have the freedom to do everything I want, which I’m pretty grateful for. I can do competitive surfing and freesurfing without having much pressure about it. I’m still growing and kind of like searching for what I really want to do and being able to do everything and being happy about it is the most important. Growing up in France and coming from a non-surfer family I feel like I had to learn everything by myself and got to the point where I had to prove to everyone around me that surfing could be more than a hobby. I grew up surfing beach breaks — we definitely don’t have the best waves, but I’m really grateful I had to grow up in France because it’s such a special place.

What do you hope to bring to surf culture?

I surf because I love it, I’m not trying to bring anything else, except sharing my story and maybe inspiring someone out there to keep believing in their dreams, even if sometimes it gets hard.

“I’m as French as it gets my whole family is French but I’m the only one who surfs.”

Tell us about the community you surround yourself with?

I started traveling at a young age, and I did some homeschooling. I never really felt understood by the people at home so I don’t have much “homies.”

When I started traveling for surfing, I met some amazing people who are now like family.

We have such a sick group of girl friends, we usually try to go on trips or meet up during surf events. It’s always good to have friends who inspire you and push you to be the best version of yourself. I’ve been traveling a bunch with Coco [Ho], she’s like a sister to me. It’s funny because I surf for her surfboard company XOCOCO so she’s my boss now [laughs].

Who is doing something you admire?

Caity simmers is someone I’ve really been enjoying watching.

She’s been proving that you can be a great competitor and a great freesurfer at the same time and it’s really inspiring all the stuff she does. She has one of the greatest style I’ve ever seen and she charges.

“I think it’s good to spend some time by yourself.”

What is your current relationship like with “surf competition?”

We used to be in a really toxic relationship [laughs]. I went through a burnout and I didn’t want to compete anymore after an injury I had 3 years ago.

Now, I feel like I'm a completely different person and I have a different perspective on life and competitive surf. I also have time to do both so now I’m back on the grind with a different perspective and I’m also freesurfing. Really grateful to be able to do both.

“I’ve been traveling a bunch with Coco [Ho], she’s like a sister to me. It’s funny because I surf for her surfboard company XOCOCO so she’s my boss now.”[laughs]

What do you listen to in your car if you have to run an errand that takes 45 minutes? (Full album length)

I would listen to the playlist I sent you. This one is full of my favorite hits. I can listen to them all day long.

It’s an average Tuesday, couple waves around, what’s your day look like beginning to end?

Well, if I’m home, I have my routines which is I wake up and make some breakfast

In France, we usually depend on the tides so either surf in the morning or go hit the gym. After all the injuries I had, I really got more serious about my health and taking care of my body. Then go home, have some lunch, listen to some music, answer some emails…Then, if I haven’t surfed yet, get in the water.

I usually link up with some friends of the day to watch the sunset or just hang out. Socializing is good for the mind.

If I’m lazy and I wanna be by myself. I’ll just get home, stretch, make some food, do skin care and watch a movie. I also think it’s good to spend some time by yourself.

I’m usually in bed by 9pm, I know sounds boring but I need my hours of sleep to function properly

Who has your favorite style?
