12 Songs: Ezekiel Lau

Ezekiel Lau’s had a wild couple years. On and off tour. Huge event wins. Baffling interference calls. New baby. New sponsor. Change is the only thing certain and for someone whose been given every opportunity to fall, he keep swinging…and they’re still connecting.

We asked him to make us a playlist and it really cuts to the chase: It is for a car full of surf psyche. Period.

Zeke Lau, the star of “New Moon” on his 12 Songs playlist: “My taste in music has drastically changed within the last year. I used to rely on music to get me into a state of mind to aid competition or training. Which was usually Hip Hop or trap music. I was heavily influenced by athletes from other sports like basketball, football or MMA — where the culture seemed to be really Hip Hop heavy. So I gravitated to listening to that type of music.

But now that I'm a dad I hardly get to even listen to my own music [laughs]. It also feels a little weird trying to listen to trap music as a father [laughs]. When it’s not Raffi Essential playlist from Apple Music I've been listening to this playlist. Usually on my way for a surf or foil session. Now focused more around feeling good or getting amped to surf. I literally curated this playlist recently with songs from some of my all time favorite surf sections with a few other songs that I just like listening to on a long drive or something. Been liking country songs a little bit and a few hip hop songs that I feel like I can relate to a little more in my life now.”
