12 Songs: Swiss Army Mix

12 Songs: Swiss Army Mix

We thought about calling this week’s playlist the “Misc. Mix” (which probably would’ve been closer to the truth), but when used in a musical context, “miscellaneous” is a lazy, dirty word; Crutch language. We needed something that still implied a sort of universality, preferably with a bit more edge…

So here’s the Swiss Army Mix (insert shrug emoji), your multifaceted approach to sonic enlightenment for the week.

Featuring:

Cheap Time. A modern classic in power pop. There were many lineups and incarnations of this band over the years; “People Talk” is taken from the only one that mattered.

Flat Worms. Tight-wound and über-nervous Angeleno punk, think Buzzcocks meets Swell Maps. Then add fuzz. And some more.

Fela Kuti. A classic afrobeat track from the best to ever do it, featuring the infamous Ginger Baker on drums.

Dorothy Ashby puts us in a trance with “Soul Vibrations''. Important because: the rare combo of theremin + harp.

Condor. A French hardcore punk favorite we discovered through our pal Tanner Rozunko. Listen to his 12 Songs here.

Had enough of this band yet?  “Future Days” by Can is up last. Get through the two-minute noise intro in the beginning and you just might see the light. —Jackson Todd
