Best Sections of All-Time: Bruce Irons, Tim Curran and Dan Malloy in Voluptuous

In 1996 Snapping Turtle Productions put out one of the films of the decade: Voluptuous: The Big Movie — it was maybe the longest surf film ever made. It just kept going and going. You’d put it on, fall asleep, wake up and somewhere in the gallows of VHS tape would be parts like this featuring Bruce, Tim Curran and Dan Malloy. You’d wake up, wipe up the drool from your mouth and be frothing to load up the car and get to the beach.

Every pro surfer that you had ever heard of is in it — and more than a few you’ve never ever heard of had full parts (Dan Kennedy, Matt Coleman, Chris Strother). Hell, maybe you have some waves in this thing. The element that made it really strong though was the variety and range the music had. It was all in the punk realm but it had a bit more grit than the Taylor Steele vids, but maybe not quite as old school punk as the Lost vids. Somewhere in the middle. Jason Kenworthy is the man behind that.

This section we’re featuring is a medley shared between Bruce Irons, Tim Curran and Dan Malloy. Shot mostly on the North Shore we see Bruce begin his Pipeline takeover, Timmy’s infamous alley-oops and Dan’s big boy arcs and textbook regluarfoot style. Set to the punk/ska sounds of Less than Jake — which is somehow making a comeback via that 917/FA skate crew — I’ve heard them show up on a few playlists — anyway, cool to see these dudes in their youth knowing what they would all go on to do.

Fun blowing dolls up with M80s too.—Brandon Guilmette
