It’s not the end of the world.

Reel Talk: Mateus Herdy

When I asked Mateus Herdy what he might change about his appearance he was at a loss. And who could blame him. He’s a dude completely comfortable in his own skin and he represents the approaching squall in the Brazilian storm.

Mateus is the product of combining Brazil’s competitive dominance with an appreciation and devotion to style, freesurfing and progression. Think school of Yago Dora. We will wait just as long to watch their next part as we will their next heat.

Mateus has been on the cusp of qualification for a few years now, and will undoubtedly crack into it, but if it takes a few years it won’t be due to lack of talent, we’ll chalk it up because he wants to put some good freesurfing into your brain first — a smart move for the longterm.

Get to know Mateus and log this name to memory, he’s going to put out your favorite part in the next few years and that’s going to be why you’ll enjoy his heats once he cracks the CT. It’s all only a matter of time.

We sat him down on our “It’s not the end of the world” couch during the US Open and got a little glimpse into this charming and confident future representative of Brazilian surfing. —Travis
