Best Sections of All-Time: Carissa Moore in Leave A Message

By 2011 Nike had gone out and bought almost all the biggest names in professional surfing, male and female. They spared no expense when it came to athletes. They wanted the best and brightest champions the world ha ever seen. A few boat trips each year in the Mentawaii’s and a chef at the team house on the North Shore were a few of the perks. But perhaps the most groundbreaking and epic contribution they made to surf culture was producing the first ever high action all female surf film: Leave A Message.

The film featured the whole Nike 6.0 women’s team — which featured Malia Manuel’s fiery opening section, Laura Enever packing pits at P-Pass and a 19-year old Carissa Moore the same year that she earned her first World Title.

Carissa had already made plenty of statements up to this point in her young surfing journey, but this one stuck with us for a while. In fact, going back and watching it today it still so gnarly!

Riss showcases every side of surfing at the highest level that had ever been done up to that point. Towing into Jaws, beautiful backhand blasts in the Mentawaii’s, and a handful of insane tuberides and tons of flair.

She then empowered a whole generation that came behind her and is still doing it today through her Moore Aloha Foundation and winning Olympic Gold Medals.

Take a trip back to 2011 and be reminded and psyched at how good this part was and still is today.—Brandon Guilmette.
