It’s not the end of the world.

Friday Night Flicks: The Bear (Season 3)

I was apprehensive sitting down to watch the first episode of FX’s new show The Bear. I doubted FX was gonna put out anything that I would find all that interesting and so I went in with a bad attitude. But then I heard the riff from Refused’s “New Noise” during the first stressful situation “Carmy” — the character played by Jeremy Allen White — goes through and I thought, “Hmm. Maybe I could get into this.” That was two years ago and I’m still hooked.

The premise of the show is this: Young chef inherits his family's sandwich shop after the suicide of his older brother. He comes home to run it, leaving behind his world of working in Michellin-starred restaurants. He is left to deal with his brother's unresolved debts, a rundown kitchen, and an unruly staff, while dealing with his own pain and family trauma.

And while I can’t relate to every detail there, running your own indie media business empire means dealing with daily skeletons, unforeseen failing, an incredible amount of doubt and “no’s” and seemingly insurmountable challenges that require you to, well, put on Refused’s New Noise to get through.

Season 3 premiered this week and you can watch every episode now on FX. Like me, tonight. —Travis Ferré
