The sand is officially hot as hell and there’s no shortage of things begging for your attention as FOMO season kicks into high gear. Italo Ferreira just beat Yago Dora down in Brazil and Caitlin Simmers beat Sawyer Lindblad — so we’re officially in Olympic countdown mode.

It will be interesting to watch surfing wade its way through the mainstream over the next few weeks. Apparently Colin Jost, host of Weekend Update on SNL and husband to Scarlett Johansson is going to be the on scene reporter in Tahiti? Ok, this already feels weird. And the space age Oakley outfits Team US will be wearing already makes me feel funny, but maybe they’re actually awesome? We’ll see.

In other contest news the Challenger Series is in South Africa so Snake Tales and all the CT tour hopefuls and their vlogging crews are grinding it out on the other side of the planet — but enough about surfing in a jersey, here’s what you should be paying attention to the next few days.

Oscar Langburne released part 1 of his 2-part film “How are Things on the West Coast” — the title an homage to Interpol and his friendship with lead singer and surf fanatic Paul Banks. We’ll have a full deep dive in the coming weeks about Oscar and the film, but if you want to dig in now, Part 1 is now playing below. If you love pointbreaks and Panama you’re going to enjoy this.

Ola Canvas — one of our favorite brands — is hosting an event for all you coffee and apparel fans from 10am-  4pm in Costa Mesa to celebrate a cool collaboration they did with Moon Goat Roasters (flyer info below). So go grab an exclusive can of brew to start your day or fire up your afternoon. They’ll be at it all day 1930 Placentia Ave. Unit A8, Costa Mesa, CA.

Melllowist — the rad succulent, plant and ceramic shop in Costa Mesa — is celebrating 4 years with an all-day celebration tomorrow from 10am to 3pm. Check out the details here, live music, food and drinks all day. Scope it.

diiv is playing at The Wiltern on Saturday night and I’ll be attending solo if you want to meet me there. Get a drink at Here’s Looking at You beforehand? I hear they make a mean martini.

The Folk Implosion — Lo-Fi 90s indie rock band fronted by Sebedoh frontman Lou Barlow and John Davis — just released a new record called Walk Thru Me.. They're the band that sing that song “Natural One” from the Larry Clark and Harmony Korine movie Kids. All you 90s junkies know what I’m talking about.

Chorduroy’s ripping new full-length debut record Voice of Reason has a vinyl that’s on sale today. Listen to this band and buy their vinyl and come see em! Good chance they’re playing an event with us soon…

In the arts and literature world, writer, egotist, alcoholic and controversial exister Norman Mailer (the dude had 6 marriages — one wife whom he stabbed — 9 children, 11 bestselling books, and 2 Pulitzer Prizes) has a film screening in New York. If you’re into people living beyond their means and writing well about it, Norman is your guy. It’s playing in New York but you can find all the info about it here.

Normal Mailer from How to Come Alive with Norman Mailer (a Cautionary Tale).

Dion Agius is putting on a Noid art show at Uluwatu Surf Villas this 4th of July. If. you’re in Bali, you’d definitely wanna be at this. Beats fireworks any day.

The Chapter 11 crew are moving out of their store (and eventually into a new one this fall) but to get rid of their gear so they don’t have to move it, they’re having a sale and who better to play Cal Worthington than Dane Reynolds. Watch below.
